Detailing your Job Duties

Have you found yourself thinking, “I’m a secretary, everyone knows what secretaries do.” In general, most people do know what some of the duties are that secretaries perform although not all the intricacies. However, in our time, we now have Administrative Assistants, Clerical Assistants and other titles that also refer to secretarial duties. Of course, this statement can be made while substituting any job title. A potential employer reviewing your resume really needs to know exactly what duties, skills and experience in which you are proficient. Oftentimes, we have been so busy “doing” throughout the time of our employment that we haven’t taken stock of exactly what it is we were doing. It is very important when you find yourself back in the job search market, to be able to identify and professionally communicate in your resume the expertise you are bringing to the table for the potential employer.

Our recommendation is to start by printing out the job description of the position in which you are applying. Highlight all the requirements and skills the employer is seeking. Next, determine your qualifications which match those skills and requirements. Then, describe your work history for each position using their key words so that each position accurately reflects your experience and skill while focusing the employer’s attention to their own keywords. You want the employer to identify you as a qualified candidate in the first few seconds of scanning your resume.
